Day 23 – American Falls

An early start allowed us to speed down the I84 and reach our destination around 3pm. We had crossed another time zone so we lost an hour. The camp site looked deserted and we were asked to register at the café. ‘Find your own site, honey and comeback and register’, drawled the young help. So we did. Out of the 86 sites available, we chose one with a sprinkler running. We looked at it as a cheap car wash. The site is best described as ‘at one with nature’ much to Dan’s delight!
The rest of us chose to explore. Just past the café was a promontory onto a reservoir. Being Summer, the water was low, exposing a shoreline. Val mad friends with an American, complete with cowboy hat, who was related to Robert the Bruce (the American not his hat). The dog and I were impatient to see what lay around the first corner.
The area was a bird lover’s paradise. On the shoreline, searching for worms? were two purple ibises. They were non stop with their probing. In the bay were two merganser ducks, diving for their tea. Further along the shore were birds that resembled Killdeer, although it was difficult to be sure, with no reference book. The usual Western Gulls and pelicans floated sedately in the late afternoon sun. There was also a bird, around magpie size with a long tail and short black and white wings which flew and paced the sandy shore area. I’ll research that one when I have a chance.
At the end of the promontory, it was possible to scramble down onto the softer shore line. That was the time to take Abby off the leash and that was the time that birdwatching stopped. She had great sport clearing the area of all animals. She quickly found all the silt channels and suffered the consequence of a hose down. That was not all that followed as she had amassed a wonderful collection of burrs which needed to be cut out.
As meal time approached, we witnessed an elderly American, not the same as before, walking his dog. That is a little euphemistic as he let his dog out, climbed back into his 70s Chevy and proceeded to tail the dog as it meandered through the scrubline. Pork chops for bbq. We were all more smoked than they were, followed by poker and then bed. We did visit the bathrooms but only briefly!
