Day 13 – San Francisco

Onwards and upwards, literally. San Francisco was in our sights if only we could find our way through the city at rush time in a 34 foot vehicle. Eventually Jules tore the Tom Tom from my sweaty hands and shouted directions over the rattle of the fixtures. Eventually, sixteen gallons later, we found the site – nestled picturesquely beside the 49ers Football stadium and the interstate. It was our most expensive stopover as it promised to be the nearest RV Park to the city; only a shuttle ride away. The park was staffed by Chinese immigrants and the only greenery was the few weeds that grew between the paving slabs.
A $12 per person shuttle later we were in the city. The temperature was a pleasant 60F but it might have been a blizzard such was the shock to the system. We had dressed up and blessed our foresight in bringing sweaters, body warmers and waterproofs. Once in town, Nic and I toured China Town, finding some interesting items to show Jules when she arrived. We met her shuttle and dived in the first restaurant. ‘Chinese Food – the greeter at the door proclaimed. I don’t think her wages were entirely warranted considering where we were. Then after a solid, if unspectacular meal in the eatery which displayed photos of Nancy Pelosi and President Clinton with the owner, (perhaps they only came to open the fortune cookies, in which case Bill should sue as he should have been warned about dry cleaning priorities) we sought the Trolley Bus. Like millions of tourists before us, we stood on the sides and felt like Tarzan and Jane as we were pulled up steep hills only to career down the other side.
We fell out somewhat exhausted but exhilarated at the Fisherman’s market. By now, it was arctic conditions so to say we strolled would be a little of an understatement. We raced up to Pier 33 ½ , yes there really is such a pier and it is not particularly short. We turned and rushed back to queue for the trolley only to arrive 45 mins before the shuttle was due to return us back to Candlewick Park; now renamed Monster Park.
